Dynamos, Caps United and Highlanders have for long been renowned for their dominance on the domestic football landscape with Dynamos going on a streak of 4 consecutive titles from 2011-2014 while green machine last won the domestic league crown in 2016.
There has however been an emergence of a different force with FC Platinum having won the domestic league from 2017-2019. The momentum was however brought to a grinding halt by the absence of football which was last played in 2019 owing to the covid-19 pandemic.
Football’s absence has in recent weeks stimulated plenty of agitation, leading to the emergence of the #bringbackfootball movement. Authorities appear to have succumbed to the pressure with cabinet this week announcing sports previously barred from participation will be allowed to resume their activity.
With anxiety surrounding an official announcement of exactly when football will be resuming, FC Platinum’s spokesperson Chido Chizondo says the platinum miners are eager to remain at the apex of local football despite not doing so well on the African Safari, “To be quite honest I think we are all tired of waiting and just want the game to resume. We obviously want to continue to dominate in the local league and equally important is our performance on the African Safari where we want to also perform well as a club”, said Chizondo.
Titles have mainly been won by clubs based in Harare and Bulawayo but the emergence of FC Platinum has swayed the dominance away from the team’s based in Harare and Bulawayo.
